Project Goal

Everyday people use computers and projectors in many different situations. The most common would be for presentations. There are many devices which aim to aid users in this context. However, there are few devices which couple the ease of using a laser pointer with the standard mouse functionality of a pc. The Projector Based Laser Human Interface Device will bridge that gap by using a digitally modulated laser beam to send information to a digital video camera. Software on the user's computer will be able interpret the images from camera and translate the user's actions to mouse functionality on the computer. In addition to acting as a mouse, the system will capable of being expanded with additional functionality corresponding with the bit sequences unused by the initial prototype remote.

We plan to develop a system that:

  1. Uses an infrared laser in a safe manner to provide positional as well as serial data
  2. Uses a camera and optical assembly to gather data provided by the laser remote
  3. Uses software implementing digital signal processing and imaging techniques to process data provided by the camera
  4. Uses software to mimic basic mouse functionality
