Abstract

Ever since Al Gore released “An Inconvenient Truth” in 2006, the impact humans have on the Earth they live on has been a big issue. From hybrid cars to renewable energy sources, consumer markets are going green to both do their part to help avert crisis and to serve a consumer base that has become increasingly obsessed with “green” technologies. For this reason, our group proposes a Modular (pre-fabricated) Green House, with the sole purpose of the house being complete environmental friendliness.

Seeing as how complete environmental friendliness is the main goal, the house must not be a part of the energy grid or a water supply. The house must generate and conserve its own energy, and gather, purify and recycle its own water. This poses several interesting problems, such as how a house can be run solely on renewable energy, and how water can be gathered and recycled without the residents having to do much work.

Several electrical systems must be designed and fitted to the house. One subsystem will manage the energy sources, i.e. wind turbines and solar panels. This system will both transform the power generated to a form usable by the house (AC power), and store leftover power to a backup battery. Also, a system will control power consumption in the house by cutting off power to unneeded appliances and controlling temperature to minimize heat/air conditioning use. A system of sensors and controls will also control a water heating, gathering and purification system.

The final product will be a house readily available to the environmentally conscious consumer. This house will readily provide peace of mind to such a consumer, while maintaining the comfort and affordability of any regular houses on the market today. This house will both be extremely “green” and extremely comfortable.
